In this edition of The Sanibel-Captiva Nature Calendar we continue to include the effects of Hurricanes Ian, Helene, and Milton on the island wildlife through both pictures and narratives. It was first apparent that the islands’ birds were least affected by the hurricanes and the plants and animals, that depend on the islands’ inland freshwater environment, were most affected. Future summer rainy season will continue to dilute the saltwater contamination and inland conditions in Sanibel’s sloughs will improve. But with the island-wide beach sand replacement project in 2024, which covered up the natural beach sand habitat, nesting shorebirds and sea turtle hatchlings were negatively affected.

Again, this edition of The Sanibel-Captiva Nature Calendar is printed on paper that contains 50% recycled content including up to 30% post-consumer waste. To minimize the negative environmental effects of manufacturing this publication, we use about one-third the material as other similar size wall calendars. This reduction of materials is accomplished by not pre-boxing, shrink wrapping, or inserting a stiffener. We also print on the thinnest paper of any color photographic calendar and the reproductions are uncoated. (The outside cover is coated in a water-based film.)
